Nottingham Forest’s opening match of the new Premier League campaign ended in disappointment as Oliver Glasner’s tenure began with a narrow defeat at the City Ground on Saturday.
Leeds United claimed victory by a single goal in a tightly contested encounter that appeared destined to end without a winner until late drama unfolded.
Anton Stach struck an 88th-minute free-kick to secure all three points for the visitors, handing Forest a 1-0 loss in what was meant to be the start of a new era under their Austrian manager.
Glasner arrived at the club in July as Forest’s fifth manager within a twelve-month period, with the aim of bringing consistency after the club endured a turbulent previous season in which four different managers occupied the dugout. Owner Evangelos Marinakis described the new appointment as someone with winning qualities when confirming the signing, with expectations high that Glasner can guide the club up the standings following their 16th-placed finish.
The match itself failed to deliver the optimism many supporters had hoped for, with both teams struggling to create clear opportunities throughout. Forest had their moments but lacked the cutting edge required to convert them into goals, while Leeds managed to capitalise on their limited chances to claim a valuable away win.
Glasner’s previous accomplishments include winning the FA Cup, Conference League and Community Shield during his time at Crystal Palace, as well as successful periods at Eintracht Frankfurt. The challenge now is to translate that experience into improved results for a Forest side that spent much of last season battling against the threat of relegation.
Leeds, under Daniel Farke’s guidance, also found themselves in similar circumstances last term but managed to secure their top-flight status comfortably in the end. The Yorkshire club showed greater intent throughout the contest and were deserving of their victory, which sets up an intriguing Carabao Cup encounter between the two sides on Tuesday.
Forest will need to respond quickly if they are to avoid another difficult season, with the performance highlighting the work still required to implement Glasner’s philosophy and achieve the club’s ambitions of pushing towards the upper reaches of the table.
