Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi appears set to seal a switch to top-flight newcomers Coventry City.
The forward will depart the City Ground following a four-year stint after both clubs agreed terms. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Saturday that Forest and Coventry have come to an understanding regarding the Nigerian international, with his medical scheduled to take place over the weekend. Coventry are understood to be spending £17million on the player.
Awoniyi arrived at Forest following their elevation to the Premier League in 2022, with the club forking out a then-record £17.2m. He registered crucial winners against Liverpool and Arsenal in the top tier, which proved instrumental in maintaining the club’s top-flight status.
After finding the net ten times in the league during the 2022/23 campaign, Awoniyi endured frustrating periods away from the pitch due to fitness issues and slipped behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the attacking hierarchy.
During the previous campaign, he made only three Premier League starts but still contributed to keeping the club in the division. He struck twice and supplied one assist during a 3-1 triumph against Chelsea in May, before adding another goal in the 3-0 success at Tottenham.
Coventry have been active in bolstering Frank Lampard’s squad as they prepare for their return to the Premier League after more than two decades. The club have surpassed their previous transfer record on three occasions this summer.
Carl Rushworth, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi have all been added to the squad, with Awoniyi expected to spearhead Lampard’s attack.
