Forest pair miss Villa clash with hamstring concerns

Nottingham Forest manager Oliver Glasner has been forced into changes for the trip to face Aston Villa after two of his central defenders were ruled out through minor fitness issues.

Nikola Milenkovic and Jair Cunha both miss the encounter at Villa Park due to hamstring tightness, meaning neither player has been risked for the 3pm Premier League fixture.

The absentees open the door for two of Forest’s summer acquisitions to make their first league starts for the club.

Ousmane Diomande and Daniel Munoz have been promoted from the substitutes’ bench into the starting lineup as a result.

Jair’s omission is particularly notable given he received his first senior Brazil call-up earlier this week for the upcoming international friendlies.

Forest have accumulated two points from their opening three top-flight matches, with draws against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur having dented their early-season momentum.

Glasner has made only two alterations to the eleven that started against Spurs, with Diomande and Munoz replacing the unavailable pair.

The Austrian coach appears set to persist with his preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

Aina is expected to feature as the right-sided central defender in the three-man rearguard, partnering Diomande and Murillo at the heart of the backline.

Munoz is poised to occupy the right wing-back position, with Neco Williams operating on the opposite flank.

Schlager and McAtee retain their spots in the middle of the park, though Sangare has returned to the matchday squad after overcoming a minor calf complaint.

Gibbs-White and Ndoye are tasked with supplying ammunition for leading striker Delap in the forward role.

The substitutes’ bench comprises John Victor, Sangare, Hudson-Odoi, Dominguez, Wood, Igor Jesus, Kalimuendo, Yates and Netz.

Glasner acknowledged that the defensive unit faced a numerical shortfall after Morato and Zach Abbott departed on loan before the transfer deadline.

Diomande, Jair, Milenkovic and Murillo represent the club’s only recognised central defenders, though the manager identified Aina, midfielder Yates and injured full-back Savona as emergency options.

Matt Sels starts in goal behind the back three.

The substitutes include eight outfield players who can provide cover across various positions.
